How much resolution do you need?

A quick guide to the minimum source photo size for each panel count.

2 panels 2160×1080 3 panels 3240×1080 4 panels 4320×1080 5 panels 5400×1080 6 panels 6480×1080 7 panels 7560×1080 8 panels 8640×1080
Recommended minimum source photo resolution by panel count. Each panel always exports at 1080×1080px, so splitting into more panels needs a wider source photo to avoid upscaling.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before you start.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens locally in your browser using your device's own processing power. Your photo is never sent to our servers or stored anywhere.

What image formats can I upload?

JPG, PNG, and WebP are all supported.

Do I need an account to use this tool?

No. The Instagram Carousel Splitter is free to use without signing in. If you're signed in to PostPlanIt, you'll also find it under Tools in the sidebar.

Why does the tool crop my photo before splitting it?

To keep every panel a perfect square (Instagram's carousel format), the tool first crops your photo to match the total width needed, centered on the middle of the image. If your photo isn't already very wide, the top and bottom (or sides) get trimmed slightly. It's the only way to guarantee a seamless swipe with no gaps or stretching.

What resolution should my photo be for the best results?

Each panel is exported at 1080×1080px, so for the sharpest results your photo's longer side should be at least 1080 × (number of panels) pixels, with the shorter side at least 1080px. For example: 2 panels needs about 2160×1080px, 4 panels needs 4320×1080px, and 8 panels needs 8640×1080px. The tool checks this automatically once you upload a photo and pick a panel count, and lets you know if your photo is smaller than recommended. It'll still work, just with slightly softer, upscaled panels.

What order do I upload the panels in?

Numeric order. The file names in the downloaded ZIP (carousel-1-of-N.jpg, carousel-2-of-N.jpg, and so on) tell you exactly which panel goes first. Upload them to Instagram as a single carousel post in that order.

Can I split more than one photo at a time?

Not yet, one photo per carousel. Click Remove image after downloading, then upload your next photo to start a new one.
